The Seoul Metropolitan Government on Thursday revoked the license of a foundation linked to the dubious Shincheongji sect, which has been a hotbed of coronavirus infections.
The foundation does not use the Shincheonji name but is headed by the same charlatan, Lee Man-hee (89).
Mayor Park Won-soon said the foundation "is an antisocial religious organization that only prioritizes its own protection and growth while putting public health and safety at risk in a situation where a contagious disease is spreading across the country."
Licenses can be revoked if an organization significantly harms the public interest. Park said the sect wasted public money and hindered government efforts to curb the outbreak by giving false information and ordering followers to lie to health authorities.
More than half of Korea's coronavirus cases are linked to Shincheonji.
