Fly-by-night Justice Minister Cho Kuk's wife Chung Kyung-shim is seeking bail after being charged with forging documents and other violations to pad her daughter's application to medical school.
The Seoul Central District Court on Wednesday gave Chung a chance to speak after a recess of more than a couple of weeks due to the coronavirus outbreak.
"My health is poor," Chung told the court. "I will be 60 soon. I'd be willing to wear an electronic bracelet if you grant me bail so I can recall things that happened some 13 years ago in my ailing physical condition."
Chung claims that accounts of witnesses differ from her memory, which requires her to take time to recall the events from 2007 to 2010 that got her in hot water.
Her lawyer said she spirited a computer from her university office just ahead of a raid by prosecutors because "throngs of reporters gathered in front of her house, she could not look at her computer at home and merely wanted to do it at a hotel or some other quiet place."
Chung denies trying to destroy evidence but had someone replace the hard drive of the office computer. Prosecutors are asking the judge refuse her application since she could still destroy evidence.
