The government ordered schools and kindergartens on Sunday to put off the start of their academic year for a week amid the spike of coronavirus infections.

It was the first postponement of the start of the new school year on a nationwide scale in the country's modern history.

The government also advised private crammers to suspend classes or close temporarily as it has no legal authority to force them to do so .

Education Minister Yoo Eun-hae also asked parents to keep their children away from crammers or Internet cafés for the time being.

The Military Manpower Administration announced a plan the same day to put off nationwide medicals of potential conscripts from Monday until March 6.

The decisions came as the government raised a red alert on Sunday as infections spiked over the weekend.

The start could be delayed further unless the situation improves. The ministry will adjust the summer vacation to make up for the shortfall.
