The number of coronavirus infections in Korea has increased to 23, with three new cases reported on Wednesday and four on Thursday morning.
The latest cases were two Korean men who had attended an international conference in Singapore, four who had come into contact with already infected victims, and one Chinese traveler who arrived here on Jan. 23.
At least four of the 23 became infected outside China, including one who had come into contact with a carrier in Japan and one who visited Thailand.
Japan, Thailand and Singapore are the countries with the most infections outside China, with 33, 25 and 24 so far.
Choi Jae-wook at Korea University said, "China is a major trade hub, so people carrying the virus are spreading out everywhere. That is why the government's efforts to stem the spread are not working effectively, unlike when Middle East Respiratory Syndrome broke out in the Middle East, where global trade traffic is much smaller."
A staffer at the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, "We simply don't have the resources and staff to manage people who visited other countries with many confirmed cases of infection."
