Four more confirmed cases of coronavirus infection were reported in Korea over the weekend, raising the total to 15. Health officials announced tougher measures to deal with the spread of the virus.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Sunday said that all individuals who came into contact with infected people must quarantine themselves, and anyone with symptoms like cough, fever or sore throat can be tested for coronavirus. So far the tests were only administered if x-rays confirmed pneumonia.
The government dispatched two chartered planes to evacuate 368 Koreans from Wuhan on Friday and another 333 on Saturday. As of Monday, over 17,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection have been reported in China and 361 have died. Some 4,000 infections and 224 deaths came from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak.
The Korean Consulate in Wuhan said there are still around 100 Korean citizens in Wuhan and 200 to 300 in surrounding Hubei Province. The consulate said it will hand out masks and other medical supplies to Korean residents there.
Meanwhile, Health and Welfare Minister Park Neung-hoo told reporters Sunday that the new coronavirus can be transmitted by carriers showing no symptoms, unlike Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in 2003 and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in 2015.
Earlier, the World Health Organization said people without symptoms appear to be able to spread the virus. Park made the announcement after infections without symptoms were reported in Germany and China.
