State-run universities will now be required to boost the quota of female faculty to more than 25 percent.
The National Assembly on Thursday passed a revised law requiring state-run universities to ensure that no more than three-quarters of faculty are the same gender.
The degree to which they comply with the quota will determine the size of their government grants.
At present, the proportion of women professors at state universities is a measly 16 percent. Existing laws did assess the performance of universities in terms of gender equality, but there were no financial consequences.
