Korea managed to defeat China 1-0 in the opener of the Asian Football Confederation U-23 Championship in Thailand on Thursday.
Korea was held by China until the last minutes of the lengthy and dull match. Lee Dong-jun, who substituted in the second half, broke the scoreless deadlock three minutes into stoppage time to give Korea the winning goal.
The championship serves as the Asian qualifiers for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, with the top four countries securing tickets. But if they do not include Japan, which automatically qualifies as the host nation, only the top three go through.
With Thursday's victory, Korea now leads its group, which also includes Iran and Uzbekistan.
It is still hard to predict who will advance to the next round, with Korea set for another tough match against Iran on Sunday.
