Single households are expected to make up the biggest proportion of Korean households in less than 10 years as more and more people live alone.
According to a report released Monday by Statistics Korea, the proportion of single households will increase from 28.5 percent in 2017 to 33.2 percent in 2028 to become the most common household type in Korea. It will continue to rise to 37.3 percent in 2047.
Those aged 60 and over will account for 56.8 percent of single households then.
The proportion of married couples without children is expected to rise from 15.8 percent to 21.5 percent over the same period while those with children will decrease from 31.4 percent to 16.3 percent.
