Japan's new ambassador to Korea, Koji Tomita, started his official duties on Tuesday.

Although he declined to comment on soured Seoul-Tokyo relations, he said, "Diplomacy begins with human relationships. Both sides must build trust to overcome difficulties."

Tomita made the comments to reporters after arriving at Gimpo International Airport.

He also vowed to listen to Korean's opinions and "faithfully" play his role as a "bridge" between the two countries.

He said an ambassador's role goes beyond dealing with day-to-day affairs and must "pursue various exchanges looking 10 or 20 years down the road."
