Singer Jung Joon-young was sentenced to six years in prison on Friday for illegally videotaping himself having sex with women and sharing the clips in Kakao Talk chatrooms.

In a joint trial, the Seoul Central District Court also sentenced Choi Jong-hoon of boy band FT Island to five years in prison for taking part in a gang rape. Choi was convicted of raping a woman together with Jung and other friends in Daegu in 2016.

The victim, who suffered from panic disorder, said she fell unconscious after drinking heavily with them.

Jung exchanged video footage and photos with his friends in a celebrity chat group in 2015 and 2016 which included clips of him having sex with women and footage of several apparent rapes. The women were mostly aspiring starlets or those they met at clubs.

The chat group also included Seung-ri of boy band Big Bang, who is embroiled in his own pimping scandal.

Jung and Choi were also ordered to attend 80 hours of sex offender treatment programs.

The court said they treated women as mere "objects of sexual desire." They had enjoyed huge popularity as entertainers, so they "should assume social responsibility in proportion to their fame and wealth," the court added. "In light of the gravity of their crimes, harsh sentences are unavoidable." Jung and Choi burst into tears after being given their prison sentences.
