U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Thursday denied a report in the Chosun Ilbo of the possibility of an entire Army brigade being pulled out of South Korea if Seoul refuses to yield to exorbitant demands for money for the upkeep of the U.S. Forces Korea.
Esper said he was not aware of such plans. "I read articles in the media all the time that are false or inaccurate or overstated," he told reporters during a trip to Vietnam. "We're not threatening allies over this. This is a negotiation."
Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said, "There is absolutely no truth to the Chosun Ilbo report that the U.S. Department of Defense is currently considering removing any troops from the Korean Peninsula."
The report had cited an unnamed diplomatic source in Washington.
