Incheon International Airport will launch an expansion project to become the world's third largest airport with a capacity for more than 100 million passengers a year by 2024.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Incheon International Airport Corporation broke ground on Tuesday on the fourth phase of construction on Terminal 2. The project includes building a fourth runway and expanding the terminal with a budget of W4.8 trillion (US$1=W1,168).

Once the expansion is complete, the number of passengers Incheon could handle each year will increase from the current 72 million to 106 million.

That would make Incheon the word's third biggest airport after Dubai and Istanbul. Currently it is the fourth biggest.

Once the new runway is built, the number of takeoffs and landings the airport can handle per hour will increase from the current 90 to 107, or one every 36 seconds.
