North Korea has developed a state-of-the-art facial recognition device, according to a propaganda mouthpiece on Thursday.

"Kim Il-sung University has developed Dambo, a facial recognition device in which technologies of a digital camera and other high-tech technologies are integrated," the North Korean website Meari said. "It is a high-performance AI product."

"Dambo processes images faster and more accurately than other products," Meari claimed. "It can also prevent deceptive acts using photos, video images, or cell phone pictures."

It added the device can be installed anywhere and works at night with an LED lamp.

North Korea sells facial recognition technology in China and Southeast Asia through IT networks or restaurants. The hard currency earned from the business can be poured into the regime's nuclear weapons and missile development.

"Until recently, North Korea has only sold facial recognition software overseas, but now it seems it's introducing it in the North as well," a source said.

Neighboring China is on its way to becoming the world's most comprehensive surveillance state by building a facial recognition database of its 1.4 billion people since 2015.
