The sea monorail on Wolmi Island in Incheon has proven to be a hit since its launch less than a month ago.
The transit service opened on Oct. 8 and carried a total of 27,877 people, or an average of 1,467 a day, until Tuesday.
"It is usually crowded with elderly people over 65 on weekdays and families on weekends," said a staffer at the Incheon Transit Corporation, which operates the service.
Due to its growing popularity, visitors have to wait for several hours before they can board, even on weekdays, since each train can accommodate a maximum of 46 passengers. The long waiting time, however, has benefited the islands' tourism, as people spend their time visiting nearby attractions while waiting for their rides.
The monorail circles around the island on a 6.1-km-long elevated track at heights ranging from 7 to 18 m, allowing passengers to enjoy open views along the way. It takes about 35 minutes to travel the entire loop.
