Hyundai Mobis has formed a strategic partnership with Velodyne of the U.S., the world's leading maker of light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensors, the auto parts company said Wednesday.

It will invest US$50 million to acquire technology to mass-produce the sensors.

The LIDAR sensor is one of the three major sensors essential in self-driving, along with cameras and radio detection and ranging (RADAR).

Hyundai already mass-produces cameras and RADAR sensors and wants to acquire mass-production technology for LIDAR sensors by 2021 in collaboration with Velodyne.
