Fig Season Is Time to Start Experimenting

    Figs are in season, and October is the best time to enjoy their sweet flavor and enticing scent.

    Once figs used to be eaten alone or perhaps used in desserts, but these days they are used in a variety of foods -- with rice, noodles or even on a pizza, or accompanying cheese and pate either fresh or as a compote or chutney.

    Figs are delicious not only with vegetables like arugula, which balance out their sweetness, but also with stir-fried beef, bacon or ham. Their juice can add dimension to the strong flavor of meat.

    Food stylist Moon In-young suggests making a pasta sauce of meat in butter with garlic and celery, then adding finely chopped figs on top.

    They are also good to eat with spicy noodles. Chopped figs will make the dish less spicy and add a unique texture.

    As a dessert, figs make the perfect match with cream cheese, fresh cream or milk. They can even make a nice sandwich with cream cheese.
