At least 10 people were killed and eight injured when typhoon Mitag slammed into southern Korea on Wednesday night. Four others remain missing, while 481 people were left homeless.
According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters on Thursday, Mitag hit the mainland near the southwestern port city of Mokpo and exited into the East Sea at around noon.
The typhoon brought 556 mm of rainfall in Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province, 489 mm on Ulleung Island and 371 mm in Gangneung, Gangwon Province.
Mitag triggered landslides that resulted in lost lives and property damage, especially in North Gyeongsang and Gangwon provinces. Transportation networks were paralyzed due to thunderstorms.
A total of 233 ships on 41 routes were grounded and 684 flights canceled from Jeju, Gimhae and Gimpo airports due to strong winds. Floods inundated 130 roads and bridges, 1,015 homes and 24 stores and factories.
