The U.S. recently branded North Korea a "malign influence" for its series of cyberattacks, Voice of America reported Monday.

That lumps it together with Russia, whose suspected interference in the U.S. presidential election in 2016 has been the subject of huge controversy.

Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland said the new naming came as North Korea "has been implicated in cyberattacks against" the U.S.

In budget plans for intelligence agencies for the new fiscal year approved in mid-July, the U.S. House and Senate intelligence committees included a section to establish a "Foreign Malign Influence Response Center" for defense against efforts by North Korea, Russia, China, and Iran to meddle in U.S. elections.
