South Korea will play against North Korea in Pyongyang next month as part of the second round of Asian qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Seoul's Korea Football Association said on Tuesday that North Korean football officials confirmed that the match slated for Oct. 15 at Kim Il-sung Stadium in Pyongyang would proceed, in a meeting with the Asian Football Confederation in Malaysia on Monday.
It will be the first match between the two Koreas on North Korean soil in almost three decades after they faced off in an inaugural Dynasty Cup match in October 1990. They were also drawn in the same qualifying group for the 2010 World Cup, but played in Shanghai, China after the North requested that a match scheduled to be played in Pyongyang be moved to a third country.
The KFA said the South Korean squad will most likely travel to Pyongyang via China, and had already applied for Chinese visas.
