Korea and Japan clashed at the International Atomic Energy Agency on Monday over Tokyo's plans to discharge radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean.
Japan's science and technology minister, Naokazu Takemoto, complained in a speech at the IAEA's General Assembly that his country is being criticized based on "unscientific positions" about the planned discharge.
Korean Vice Science and ICT Minister Mun Mi-ock said "concerted efforts" by the IAEA and member states are needed to deal with the discharge of contaminated water, which could affect the global maritime ecosystem.
This is the first time the Korean government has raised the issue on the international stage.
