Lingling, this year's 13th typhoon, will make landfall near Ganghwa Island on Saturday, the Korea Meteorological Administration predicted Wednesday.

It warned the typhoon will be accompanied by winds strong enough to uproot trees.

According to the KMA, Lingling was moving north from the sea some 450 km southeast of Taipei at a speed of 5 km/h as of 3 p.m. Wednesday. It is a midsize typhoon with a central pressure of 980 hPa and a maximum wind speed of 104 km/h.

Lingling will become stronger as it approaches Korea by sucking up heat from warm waters near Taiwan. It will bring squalls with a maximum wind speed of 126 to 162 km/h or 35 to 45 m/s, which is strong enough to derail trains, to parts under its direct influence like Jeju, the southern coast, the western coast, and some areas in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province.

It is expected to arrive in Seogwipo, Jeju on Friday afternoon and hit Ganghwa Island on Saturday afternoon.
