Sales of Air Conditioners Drop Amid Cooler Summer

Sales of air conditioners fell unexpectedly short this year because the summer was cooler than last year's.

Market researchers Gfk said Monday that 660,000 air conditioners were sold offline and 297,000 online in the first half of this year, bringing the total to just shy of a million.

Normally sales peak between April and June, and the figures suggest that cooler summer compared to last year was the major reason for the lackluster sales.

"Compared to the record-breaking heat wave we had last year, this year's wasn't so bad, so we now expect that sales will not be as high as last year's estimated 2.5 million," said an industry insider.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the hottest temperature this summer was 37.5 degrees in Uiseong, North Gyeongsang Province on Aug. 5. But that was 3.5 degrees lower than last year's high in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province on Aug. 1.

The number of days when daytime high was 33 degrees or more this summer is expected to be around half of last year's.
