Korea and the U.S. have renewed their Multilateral Air Services Agreement, according to a military spokesman on Monday.
MASA is designed to mobilize commercial jets for transport of U.S. troops in a war on the Korean Peninsula.
The military did not make the renewal public at the time for fear of agitating North Korea.
Seoul and Washington discussed the renewal in July, about a month before MASA expires on Aug. 17, the spokesman said. "As a result, the two countries agreed to extend the pact for another five years."
Since the agreement signed in 2004, the two countries used to conduct a drill to transport American soldiers from the U.S.' military bases in Okinawa and Hawaii until last year, but it was skipped this year as joint military exercises either canceled or scaled down.
