More than a half of major Japanese businesses have no particular opinion on fresh Japanese export curbs against Kores, according to a Kyodo News poll.

Fifty-four percent of 112 major Japanese companies ticked "don't know" in the survey conducted in July.

This suggests that they are waiting to see what the effects will be.

But there is also a suspicion that businesses are wary about expressing their opposition candidly in a culture where rocking the boat is frowned upon or because they do not wish to fall foul of growing anti-Korean sentiment among their customers.

A mere 23 percent said that Japan's economy will expand more slowly. Forty-six percent also expressed worries about their poor performance due to the U.S.-China trade war.
