Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon is expected to attend the coronation of new Japanese emperor Naruhito on Oct. 22 instead of the president. But the Prime Minister's Office and Foreign Ministry said no decision has been made.
According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the lineup will be less than stellar. The U.S. is sending Vice President Mike Pence and China Vice President Wang Qishan.
A diplomatic source said, "Sending an official who ranks lower than a prime minister to such an event could trigger a diplomatic dispute." On the other hand, Naruhito is the head of state but many of the foreign dignitaries are not.
