Ryu Hyun-jin will return to the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday after a short break on the 10-day injured list. He will aim for his 12th win of the season in a home game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Ryu had a solid outing in his last start against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on July 31, tossing six scoreless innings while giving up three hits. However, he felt discomfort in the right side of his neck the next day, and was placed on the 10-day injured list. Ryu had a bullpen session to check his condition on Tuesday, and decided to return on Sunday. He has started twice against the Diamondbacks this season, posting two wins with a 0.69 ERA.
Ryu is back at the top of the race for the Cy Young Award in the National League. A mock vote for the award released by MLB.com on Wednesday showed that Ryu was in first place, with votes from 31 of 47 journalists. His rival Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals had 16 first place votes. In the previous vote on July 16, Scherzer had 26 first place votes compared to 11 for Ryu.
Two important barometers for the Cy Young Award, ERA and winning percentage, are in Ryu's favor. He has a comfortable lead in ERA with 1.53, which is the lowest in the MLB, while his winning percentage of 0.846 from 11 wins and two losses is equal best with teammate Clayton Kershaw.
