North Korea claimed Saturday that it surpassed its first-half industrial production target by 108 percent. The claim contradicts estimates that international sanctions have slashed the North's trade by half and caused its economy to shrink.

The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency here believes North Korea's exports dropped 86.3 percent to US$243 million, while trade fell 48.8 percent to $2.84 billion last year.

And the Institute for National Security Strategy predicted last week that sanctions will cause the North's economy to contract further. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization also said the swine fever epidemic will cause the North's food situation to get worse.
