South Korea was drawn in the same group as North Korea for the second round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers.
In the draw held in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, South Korea ended up pairing with North Korea, along with Lebanon, Sri Lanka and Turkmenistan.
The second-round qualifiers will begin in September, with eight groups of five teams playing a home-and-away format. The eight winners and the top four runners-up will advance to the final qualifying round.
South Korea will have an away match in Turkmenistan on Sept. 10, followed by matches against Sri Lanka (Oct.10), North Korea (Oct. 15) and Lebanon (Nov. 14). Then there will be further matches between the five countries through June next year.
After the draw, manager Paulo Bento said it was "Neither bad nor especially good."
He also downplayed any significance of the grouping with North Korea. "The important thing is we will play against [North Korea] twice, just like any other opponent in the group."
