Hollywood star Kim Basinger is in Korea to promote a cause dear to her heart -- the protection of animal rights.
Basinger is attending an anti-dog meat protest organized by Animal Liberation Wave on Friday. She said she wants to express "solidarity and support" for Korea's grassroots movement.
Speaking to the Chosun Ilbo in a hotel in Seoul on Thursday, the star said she is unhappy about the waning Korean custom of eating dog meat to celebrate the three hottest days of the year.
"It is tradition, but it is against the rights of animals," she said, just like bullfighting in Spain and whale hunting in Japan.
She added that Korea is a "dynamic" country and traditions can change quickly.
Basinger became involved in animal rights campaigns 45 years ago and was already a member of the Last Chance for Animals when she was at the height of her acting career in the 1980s and 90s.
