North Korea's state media exalted the completion of nuclear weapons development on Monday as the regime marked the 25th anniversary of founder Kim Il-sung's death.
In an editorial," the official Rodong Sinmun daily claimed the impoverished country's "strategic status has changed fundamentally" under the leadership of the founder's grandson, Kim Jong-un -- an apparent reference to his nuclear weapons.
Accompanied by senior party and military officials, Kim paid his respects at his grandfather's mummified corpse at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang.
Flags hung at half-mast across the North, and state TV showed North Koreans observing three minutes of silence to the sound of sirens at noon.
