Thirty-three percent of Americans support a preemptive nuclear strike on North Korea even if 1.1 million North Koreans would be killed, a survey suggests.
The poll of 3,000 Americans conducted in February by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists was published by pollster YouGov on Monday.
Respondents were given a range of scenarios and asked if they would support a nuclear strike on the North after being shown a fictional news story saying that the North has succeeded in developing a nuclear weapon that is capable of attacking the U.S.
"For many of these hawks, support for an attack, even in a preventive war, does not significantly decrease when the story says that the United States would use nuclear weapons that are expected to kill 1 million North Korean civilians," the journal noted.
