Korea defeated Ecuador 1-0 in a semifinal of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland on Tuesday to set up its first-ever appearance in the final.

It is the first time Korea has reached the final of any tournament organized by international football's governing body. Previously, Korea's best performance had been its fourth-place finishes at the biennial youth tournament in Mexico in 1983 and at the World Cup it co-hosted with Japan in 2002.

In the 43rd minute, Choi Jun scored  the winning goal off a well-worked free kick from Lee Kang-in. There were some close moments for Korea as Ecuador pushed hard for an equalizer. Just before the final whistle, Leonardo Campana attempted to force extra time with a close-range header, only to be thwarted by goalie Lee Kwang-yeon who pulled off a superb save.

On Saturday Korea will face off against Ukraine, who also reached the final for the first time after defeating Italy 1-0.
