President Moon Jae-in and his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinistö agreed in Helsinki on Monday to launch a new direct flight between Busan and the Finnish capital. That will make it more convenient for travelers in southern parts of the country to reach the bridgehead into Europe.
Moon on Sunday embarked on an eight-day trip to Scandinavia, and Finland is the first leg. Moon told reporters that he was very pleased to see his hometown directly linked to Helsinki.
Moon also expressed optimism about the resumption of U.S.-North Korea and inter-Korean talks, which he claimed will resume sooner rather than later thanks to behind-the-scenes negotiations.
He dismissed the idea of Helsinki playing an intermediary role.
Niinistö said Finland is ready to give diplomatic support anytime, but added his country is committed to the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea before sanctions against the North are eased.
