Too Much Stretching Could Do More Harm Than Good

Stretching eases tense muscles and minimizes the risk of injury, but excessive stretching could weaken joints, ligaments and tendons, causing more pain and illness down the road.

Excessive stretching causes ligaments to loosen and leads to instability in the bones. Choi Yoo-wang, an orthopedic surgeon, said, "Infections can occur on the ligaments, or cartilage inside the joints can become damaged, leading to the early onset of degenerative arthritis."

Chronic pain can result if the injury does not heal properly.

Hong Jung-gi of Cha University Graduate School of Sports Medicine said, "If you stretch your ligaments improperly, the surrounding muscles tense up in order to stabilize the joint. The muscle tension then adds pressure on the nerves and can cause pain."

"You have to stretch gently and not force it," Choi added. A tugging feeling on the joints is adequate, and it is no use stretching until it hurts.
