A senior official in Seoul has called on the government to deliver drugs and equipment to North Korea to prevent the spread of African swine fever.

Vice Unification Minister Suh Ho told a meeting in Seoul that South Korea must discuss delivering the necessary equipment with Washington. "Working-level officials are already exchanging views with their U.S. counterparts about this," he said. "We haven't received any request for help from the North yet," he added.

African swine fever broke out in China last August. It has spread to the North Korean province of Chagang recently.

Seoul notified Pyongyang through the inter-Korean liaison office last Friday of its willingness to help with disinfection and quarantine. But as of Monday there was no answer. The two sides are supposed to exchange information on infectious diseases under a cross-border agreement concluded last November.

"The two sides need to cooperate to fight animal diseases too in the spirit of the agreement, but this isn't clearly stated," a Unification Ministry official said.
