Hyundai will use batteries made by Chinese manufacturer CATL in the electric models of the small Kona SUV set to hit showrooms in China next month.
CATL was established eight years ago and has taken the lead in the global automotive battery market as of April. Hyundai also turned to CATL to supply batteries for the EV version of Avante compact launched as the Uiedung in China in 2017.
The reason is that Hyundai wants its cars to qualify for Chinese government subsidies on EV purchases. Beijing stopped offering them for EVs equipped with Korean batteries in 2016 amid an unofficial boycott of Korean products.
But Avante EVs became eligible in February last year and Encino EVs last month because they use Chinese batteries.
In all other countries Hyundai uses LG Chem batteries for EVs.
