A U.S.-Korea joint drill at the end of August will be led by a Korean general for the first time to see if Seoul is ready to take back full operational control of its troops.
A military source said, "This will be the first evaluation of Korea's ability to take back wartime troop control."
Once the Korean military takes over full operational control over its troops in wartime, a Korean general would command combined Korea-U.S. forces with an American general assisting him, an unprecedented arrangement in the U.S.' global alliances.
U.S. Forces Korea Commander Robert Abrams told a seminar in Hawaii last week and said the Korean military's "combined crisis-management ability" will soon be put to the test.
