The government wants to revise the law so parents no longer have the right to corporal punishment of their children, a spokesman said Thursday. The current law allows parents to discipline their children as they see fit.

Only a handful of countries like Japan still allow parents to punish their children physically. But in March the Japanese government announced a plan for a debate to decide whether that should be banned.

Korea in principle bans guardians from inflicting "physical or psychological pain" on children. But habitual abusers sometimes cite the right to discipline their children under the separate civil law.

The planned revision aims to clear up the legal quandaries.

Fifty-four countries have banned corporal punishment of children. Sweden was the first in 1979.
