Both production and exports of cars rose last month after a long lull even though overall exports continued to decline.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said car output went up five percent on-month in April to around 372,000 units thanks to new models including Hyundai's Palisade SUV rolling off the assembly lines.
On-year, car exports also increased three percent thanks to solid demand in North America and Europe.
At home, sales of domestic models went up, but overall car sales were down 3.6 percent on-year because of a fall in sales of imports.
