White House National Security Adviser John Bolton and U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun will visit Seoul later this month.
They will want to remind Seoul to abide closely by U.S.-led sanctions against North Korea as the North continues to call for an easing of economic strictures while turning to Russia and China for help.
Biegun will attend a regular bilateral working group meeting on May 8 to 10. The Foreign Ministry on Thursday said the agenda of the meeting has not been set yet, and Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha only said Biegun's visit will involve "important discussions."
Japan's NHK reported that Bolton plans to visit Seoul on May 28 to meet with his South Korean counterpart Chung Eui-yong, but diplomatic sources said no details of the hawkish official's visit have been decided.
