A senior North Korean official has warned the U.S. of "unwanted consequences" unless it shifts its position on denuclearization.

Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui issued the warning on Tuesday without elaborating on what those consequences would be.

It came after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told CBS News last week that the future of denuclearization talks will be "bumpy." If negotiations break down, "then we'll have to, obviously, change path," he said.

"When it comes to the so-called need to 'change paths' as U.S. officials say, it isn't a privilege exclusive to the U.S. It could be our choice if we put our mind to it," Choe told the North's official Korean Central News Agency. "It's a stupid and dangerous idea."

Relations between the two countries have returned to the ice age since their summit in Hanoi collapsed in February.

"Our determination towards denuclearization remains unchanged and we'll put it into action in due time," Choe added. "But it'll be possible only when the U.S. changes its current calculation method and redefines its position."
