A garbage mountain that was returned to Korea after illegally being shipped to the Philippines by a Korean recycling company will now be incinerated. It has been sitting in Pyeongtaek since February.
Incineration will start on Wednesday. It amounts to 195 containers or around 4,600 tons of waste.
The city government ordered the company to dispose of the trash in February, but there has been no response. The Environment Ministry and the city government therefore decided to dispose of it first and bill the company for the W1 billion cost of incineration (US$1=W1,137).
A ministry spokesman said Korea will consult with the Philippines about how to dispose of the rest of the illegally exported trash that still remains there.
