Some 300 passengers were evacuated Thursday when a subway train derailed in the tunnel between Suraksan and Dobongsan stations on Subway Line No. 7.

Two wheels of the eight-carriage train derailed and the friction caused smoke to enter the cabin. "Smoke filled up the train while an announcement told everyone to wait," a witness posted on social media. Another said, "Something smelled like it was burning."

Emergency rescue workers guided the passengers to safety through the tunnel to Dobongsan Station, which took about 30 minutes. One male passenger in his 70s was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation, but no other casualties were reported.

Seoul Metro said around 8 p.m. that all passengers had been safely evacuated. A spokesman said an investigation is underway to determine the cause and workers were trying to repair the subway.

The derailment halted services on the line.
