North Korea is paying Russia about US$400,000 a year to keep the pickled corpses of former leaders Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il shipshape.
Their bodies are being preserved by a team of specialists from the "Lenin Lab," which also looks after the embalmed body of the revolutionary leader, the New York Post reported Wednesday.
The two North Korean leaders' bodies have been on display at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang since they were embalmed by Russian technicians after their deaths in 1994 and 2011.
The Lenin Lab also embalmed former Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh in 1969 and still looks after him.
"It's not clear how much impoverished North Korea spends on maintaining the Kims' bodies," the daily added. "When Moscow released preservation costs for the first time in 2016, it reported spending nearly $200,000 that year to maintain Lenin."
