Paik Seung-ho of Girona FC on Thursday became just the sixth Korean to debut in Spain's top-tier league La Liga.

He follows Lee Chun-soo (Real Sociedad), Lee Ho-jin (Racing Santander), Park Ju-young (Celta Vigo), Kim Young-gyu (Almeria) and Lee Kang-in (Valencia).

Paik, a midfielder, took the pitch in the 67th minute of Girona's 1-1 home draw against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of round of 16 in the Copa Del Rey. He did not score a goal or lodge an assist, but displayed flashes of his precision passing and other skills.

"What an unforgettable day. I'll continue applying myself with a humble heart," he said after the game.

In 2010, Paik, then 13, generated huge excitement when he joined the youth team of Spanish powerhouse FC Barcelona. He was the first Korean to sign a pro contract with Barcelona's reserve team, Barça B, but failed to break into the first squad.

He moved to Girona in July last year after the team was promoted to the top-tier league.
