Mercedes-Benz became the first foreign car brand to sell over 70,000 vehicles in Korea in a year.
According to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association on Saturday, Mercedes-Benz sold 70,798 cars in 2018, holding on to the top spot among imported cars in Korea for the third year running.
BMW came second with 50,524 cars, plunging 15.3 percent from 2017 due to a spate of spontaneous engine fires. Toyota was a distant third with 16,774 cars sold, followed by Volkswagen with 15,390, Lexus with 13,340 and Audi with 12,450.
Mercedes-Benz also became the first foreign brand to sell over 50,000 cars in a year in 2016, reaching the 60,000 milestone just a year later. There is a difference of less than 20,000 cars sold between Mercedes-Benz and two domestic carmakers, Renault Samsung, which sold 90,369, and GM Korea with 85,432.
Three out of the top five imported models were Mercedeses. The bestseller was the E300 4MATIC with 9,141. Next came the Lexus ES300h with 8,803, then the Mercedes E300 with 8,726, the BMW 520d with 7,696, and the Mercedes E200 with 7,195.
Some 260,705 imported cars were newly registered last year, up 11.8 percent from 2017 and accounting for 16.7 percent of the passenger car market in Korea.
