Korea begins its quest for its first Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup title in nearly six decades on Monday night with a match against the Philippines in Dubai.
Korea won the first two Asian Cup tournaments in a four-team format back in 1956 and 1960.
Korea is grouped with China, Kyrgyzstan and the Philippines. While it is among the favorites, it is going to be challenging for Korea as the competition is bigger than ever this year with 24 teams, up from 16. It is Portuguese head coach Paulo Bento’s first big challenge since taking the reins in August last year.
Tottenham Hotspur striker Son Heung-min will miss the first two matches, as he is set to join the squad after Jan. 13.
