Biting Cold Grips Seoul

    The mercury plummeted sharply on Friday morning, with heavy snow expected in Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces.

    Temperatures were 6 to 10 degrees Celsius lower than the previous day while icy winds blew across the country.

    Morning lows fell to -8 degrees in Seoul and below -10 degrees in some other regions, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration. The mercury is expected to stay below zero in many parts during the daytime.

    Temperatures are expected to drop even further on Saturday with -10 degrees in Seoul and Daejeon and -6 degrees in Daegu.

    Seven 7 to 10 cm of snow will is expected to fall along the west coast of South Chungcheong and South Jeolla provinces and in inland areas in North Jeolla Province between Friday night and Saturday morning. Two to 7 cm of snow is expected in the mountainous parts of Jeju Island and on the five northwesternmost islands, Ulleung Island and Dokdo islets.
