Online and mobile shopping transactions in October increased by 36 percent on-year to more than US$9 billion.
Data released by Statistics Korea on Wednesday showed that purchases of food and beverages led the way, rising nearly 50 percent, followed by cosmetics, winter apparel, electronics, and home appliances.
The agency cited the ongoing rise of one-person households and the development of safer and more convenient digital and biometric payment systems as major reasons for the surge.
Another contributor is a growing influx of Chinese visitors, it added, because many of them buy goods online from Korean duty-free shops ahead of their visit.
