One person died and 20 others were injured on Tuesday night after a subterranean hot water pipe burst in Goyang north of Seoul.

Boiling water poured into nearby stores causing serious burns to two people. The single fatality reported so far was a person who became trapped in a car when the pipe burst.

The pipe supplied heating water to the region and was maintained by Korea District Heating Corporation. The company said it was laid in 1991, and pressure appears to have built up inside the aging pipe.

Boiling water floods a street in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province on Tuesday night in this video grab from YouTube.

The accident cut off hot water for at least 5,400 homes in the region from 9 p.m., when the incident happened, until 11 p.m. as mercury levels dipped below freezing.

Steam from the boiling water forced police to block traffic due to low visibility as the water froze solid on the streets.

KDHC dispatched an emergency crew of workers to the scene of the accident. Police and firefighters are investigating the cause of the accident.
